Learning how to invest in PSX is simpler than many people think. You need a licensed broker, an account to hold your shares, money in your own bank account and a plan. This step-by-step guide walks Pakistani beginners through each stage, from choosing a broker to placing a first order, with the official sources to check at every step.

A beginner’s guide to investing on the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

For context, the KSE-100 index closed at 166,409.25 on 30 October 2026, 5.0% higher than a year earlier on 29 October 2025 (158,465.06). Index levels move every day, and a year of gains says nothing certain about the next one, so start with a plan rather than with the market’s latest move.

How to invest in PSX: the six steps at a glance

The Pakistan Stock Exchange sets out the basic route on its Open an Account and Invest page. In short:

Step What you do What you need
1. Set your goal Decide why you are investing, for how long and how much you can afford to see fall in value A budget and a time frame
2. Choose a broker Shortlist licensed brokerage firms and compare fees, research and app quality The PSX list of TREC holders
3. Open your accounts Open a brokerage account and a CDC sub-account, and consider a CDC Investor Account CNIC, account forms, nominee details
4. Fund the account Transfer money from your own bank account, not cash Cheque or bank transfer in your name
5. Research and place an order Pick companies, set a price and quantity, and place a buy order Your broker’s app or a call to your dealer
6. Keep records Check confirmations and statements, and track dividends and taxes Trade confirmations and account statements

Step 1: Decide what you are investing for

Shares are a long-term asset. Prices can fall sharply over weeks or months, so money you may need soon, such as next year’s school fees or an emergency fund, is usually better kept in a bank deposit or a money market fund. Ask yourself three questions before you start: what is the goal, how many years can I leave the money invested, and how would I feel if it fell by a quarter? Your answers decide how much you put into shares and how many different companies you hold.

Step 2: Choose a licensed broker

You cannot buy shares directly from the exchange. Orders go through a brokerage firm that holds a Trading Rights Entitlement Certificate (TREC) from PSX and is licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). PSX publishes a list of TREC holders you can search by name and city; some entries are marked as suspended, so read the status next to the name.

When you compare brokers, look at:

  • Fees: commission per trade, account charges and CDC charges. PSX asks investors to get the list of fees and commissions in writing.
  • Platform: a reliable mobile app or web terminal, and how quickly the dealer desk answers the phone.
  • Research: some brokers publish research notes free for clients.
  • Account type: PSX advises investors to avoid discretionary accounts, where the broker trades on your behalf without asking you first.

Step 3: Open your brokerage account and CDC account

Your shares are held electronically at the Central Depository Company (CDC), not on paper. PSX describes three accounts: a brokerage account for placing orders, a CDC sub-account opened through the broker to hold your shares, and a CDC Investor Account, which you hold directly with CDC. PSX encourages investors to open the Investor Account as well, for greater safety and individual custody of their shares. Make sure you are given a Unique Identity Number (UIN), which identifies you across the market.

For an individual, PSX lists these documents:

  • An attested copy of your Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC).
  • CNIC copies of any joint holders and nominees.
  • Attested passport copies for non-residents.
  • A letter of authorisation if someone else will place orders for you.
  • The broker’s schedule of fees, commissions and CDC charges.

Brokers also run their own know-your-customer checks, so expect questions about your income, occupation and source of funds.

Step 4: Put money into the account

PSX says to deposit funds by cheque from your own account and not to deposit cash. A transfer from a bank account in your name leaves a clear record and protects you if there is ever a dispute. Trades are settled through the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL), which handles the payment for shares you buy and sell. Your broker will tell you by when funds must reach your account before or after a trade.

Step 5: Research companies and place your first order

Before you buy, learn the basics of how a company makes money, how much debt it carries and whether its profits are backed by cash. Our stock fundamentals glossary covers the key terms, and the Market Pulse Hub dashboard scores the 269 PSX companies we follow with a Pulse Score (our measure of financial quality, up to 95) and an estimated fair value (what our models suggest one share is worth). Both are estimates to help you research, not instructions to buy. Our guide to reading a stock page explains each part.

When you place an order you choose the company’s symbol, the number of shares and a price. A limit order sets the highest price you will pay; a market order takes the best price available. Large, frequently traded companies are easier to buy and sell at a fair price than thinly traded ones. Regular trading hours, from the PSX trading hours page, are:

Day Pre-open Regular trading Post-close
Monday to Thursday 9:15 am to 9:30 am 9:32 am to 3:30 pm 3:35 pm to 3:50 pm
Friday, first session 9:00 am to 9:15 am 9:17 am to 12:00 pm None
Friday, second session 2:15 pm to 2:30 pm 2:32 pm to 4:30 pm 4:35 pm to 4:50 pm

PSX notes that orders entered in the pre-open session cannot be cancelled or changed until the end of the short break that follows it. Hours change in Ramadan and around holidays, so check the PSX site or ask your broker.

Step 6: Keep records, dividends and taxes in order

Check every trade confirmation and monthly statement against your own records, and query anything you do not recognise straight away. Dividends reach you after tax has been deducted at source. The FBR’s withholding tax rate card for tax year 2027 (updated to 30 June 2026 under the Finance Act 2026) shows most dividends taxed at 15% for people on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL) and 30% for those not on it. Dividends from independent power producers are taxed at 7.5% and 15%, and dividends from companies that pay no tax because of exemptions or carried forward losses at 25% and 50%. Being on the ATL halves the rate, which is one good reason to file your tax return.

Gains from selling shares are subject to capital gains tax. The rate depends on your tax status and when you bought the shares, so ask your broker how it is worked out and deducted for your account, and confirm the current rates with them or a tax adviser. If dividends are a big part of your plan, our list of the highest dividend yield stocks on PSX and our dividend yield explainer are good next reads.

Common mistakes beginners make

  • Following tips. Messages promising sure profits or “inside” news are a warning sign, not a shortcut.
  • Putting everything in one stock. Spreading money across several companies and sectors reduces the damage if one goes wrong.
  • Using borrowed money. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains.
  • Trading too often. Commissions, taxes and bad timing eat into returns.
  • Ignoring the accounts. A rising share price is not a substitute for reading the company’s results.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to start investing in PSX?

The PSX account opening page does not set a minimum amount. Brokers may set their own minimum deposit, so ask the firms on your shortlist before you apply, and start with an amount you can leave invested for years.

What is the difference between a CDC sub-account and a CDC Investor Account?

A sub-account is opened through your broker and your shares are held under the broker’s CDC participant account. A CDC Investor Account is held directly with the Central Depository Company. PSX encourages investors to open one for greater safety and individual custody of their shares.

How do I check that a broker is genuine?

Look the firm up on the PSX list of TREC holders and confirm it is licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Avoid anyone who offers guaranteed profits or asks you to hand over control of your account.

Can I invest in PSX if I live abroad?

Overseas Pakistanis can invest, and PSX lists extra documents for non-residents, such as attested passport copies. Ask your broker which documents and account route apply to you.

Are dividends taxed in Pakistan?

Yes. Under the FBR withholding tax card for tax year 2027, most company dividends are taxed at 15% for people on the Active Taxpayers List and 30% for those who are not, with different rates for some cases. Capital gains on shares are taxed too. Confirm the rates that apply to you with your broker or a tax adviser.
