What is a SIP?

A systematic investment plan (SIP) means investing the same amount every month, whatever the market is doing. In Pakistan you can run a SIP through a mutual fund or VPS pension fund, or by buying PSX shares through your broker each month. Because the amount is fixed, it buys more shares or units when prices are low and fewer when they are high, which averages your purchase price (rupee cost averaging) and takes the guesswork out of timing the market.

How to use the SIP calculator

Enter the amount you will invest each month, an optional starting lump sum and a yearly step-up if you plan to raise the monthly amount with your salary. In Projection mode, choose an expected yearly return and the number of years; the calculator shows the final value, the total you put in, the growth and the value in today's rupees after inflation. In KSE-100 history mode it replays the same plan on actual month-by-month index returns from any start date, so you can see what a real SIP would have done through rallies and crashes.

SIP formula

Each month the investment grows at the monthly rate i = yearly return / 12. With an amount P paid at the start of every month for n months, the final value is FV = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) / i] × (1 + i). With a step-up, the monthly amount rises by the chosen percentage every 12 months and the calculator adds each month separately.

Example: Rs 10,000 a month

Rs 10,000 a month for 10 years at 15% a year grows to about Rs 27.87 lakh from Rs 12.00 lakh invested, a gain of Rs 15.87 lakh. Raising the amount by 10% every year turns the same plan into about Rs 39.57 lakh from Rs 19.12 lakh invested. The table shows Rs 10,000 a month at different returns and lengths of time: the longer the plan, the more of the final value comes from growth rather than your own money.

What the KSE-100 has actually returned

Based on month-end closes to October 2026, the KSE-100 index rose about 29.2% a year over 5 years, 15.4% a year over 10 years and 14.4% a year over 20 years, not counting dividends, which have usually added several percent a year more. A SIP of Rs 10,000 at every month-end close from October 2016 to October 2026 would have bought index units worth about Rs 39.59 lakh against Rs 12.00 lakh invested, again before dividends. These returns came with deep falls along the way, such as 2008 and 2017 to 2019, which is exactly when a SIP keeps buying cheaply. See the year-by-year record on the KSE-100 returns page.

Tips for a SIP in Pakistan

  • Use a realistic return. Test the plan at a lower rate too; a plan that only works at 20% a year is fragile.
  • Look at the inflation-adjusted value. Pakistan's inflation has often been high, so the real growth matters more than the headline figure.
  • Keep going through falls. Stopping a SIP in a bear market gives up the cheap months that make the averaging work.
  • Mind the costs: fund management fees, front-end loads and brokerage all reduce the return.
  • Tax: capital gains and dividends are taxed; filers pay lower rates than non-filers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SIP calculator?

It works out what a fixed monthly investment grows to over time at a given yearly return, showing the total invested, the growth and the final value.

How much will Rs 10,000 a month grow to in 10 years?

At 15% a year, about Rs 27.87 lakh from Rs 12.00 lakh invested. At 10% a year it is about Rs 20.66 lakh, and at 20% about Rs 38.24 lakh.

What return should I use for a SIP in PSX stocks?

The KSE-100 has returned about 15.4% a year over the last 10 years before dividends. Use a conservative figure and compare a few.

Is a SIP better than a lump sum?

A lump sum invested at a low point usually does better, but nobody knows where the low point is. A SIP spreads the risk of bad timing and suits people investing from monthly income.

Can I do a SIP directly in PSX shares?

Yes. Buy the same rupee amount of a stock, a basket of stocks or an ETF through your broker every month. Mutual funds and VPS pension funds offer automatic monthly plans.

What does the step-up option do?

It raises the monthly amount by a fixed percentage every year, for example in line with salary increases. Even 10% a year makes a large difference over 15 to 20 years.
