Valuations only make sense against the right peers. Banks usually trade on low P/E and P/B multiples and pay high dividends; technology and pharmaceutical companies trade on higher multiples because investors expect faster growth; cement, steel and autos swing with the economic cycle. A P/E of 8 can be expensive for a bank and cheap for a pharmaceutical company. The sector view on the dashboard adds the average Pulse Score, how it changed over the last week and month, earnings momentum by sector and the median margin of safety for members.

A median is the middle company in the sector, so one loss-making company with a huge P/E or a one-off dividend does not distort the figure.
