Leading indicators for Pakistan

Leading indicators are numbers that tend to turn before the economy and corporate profits do: things like money supply, the real interest rate, the trade balance, cement and fuel demand, and the rupee's real exchange rate. The dashboard above tracks six of them and marks each as positive, neutral or negative. When most of them improve together, earnings and the KSE-100 have usually followed a few months later.

The economic regime map

Growth and inflation together place Pakistan in one of four regimes. Goldilocks (growth up, inflation easing) has favoured most of the market; Reflation (growth up, inflation rising) tends to suit banks, energy and commodity producers; Disinflation (growth down, inflation easing) often comes with rate cuts that later help cyclicals; and Stagflation (growth down, inflation rising) has been hardest on stocks. The map shows where the economy sits now and the sectors that did best in that regime before.

Sector leaders

The sector leaders table ranks every stock we cover against the peers in its own sector, so a bank is compared with banks and a cement maker with cement makers. That avoids the usual trap of comparing a low P/E bank with a high P/E technology company. Members see the full ranking with scores and fair values; visitors can open any company's page from the PSX stocks list.
