How the tax is worked out

Tax is charged in slabs on the yearly taxable salary. For a monthly salary of Rs 200,000 the yearly salary is Rs 2,400,000, which falls in the slab from Rs 2,200,000 to Rs 3,200,000: Rs 116,000 plus 20% of the Rs 200,000 above Rs 2,200,000, so Rs 156,000 a year, or Rs 13,000 a month. The effective rate is 6.5% even though the top rate is 20%, because the lower slabs are taxed at lower rates.

What the calculator does not include

  • Allowances that are partly exempt, such as some medical allowances.

  • Any surcharge or special levy announced after the budget.

Your employer deducts tax every month based on the expected yearly salary; the final tax is settled in your annual return with the FBR. For the official position, check the Income Tax Ordinance and the FBR's tax calculator.

An estimate for planning, not tax advice. Slabs change with every budget; the FBR and your employer's payroll are the final word. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
