What it costs to trade on the PSX

Every buy and sell on the Pakistan Stock Exchange carries several charges on top of the share price. The broker's commission is the biggest; the government adds provincial sales tax on that commission; and the exchange, the clearing company (NCCPL), the depository (CDC) and the regulator (SECP) each take a small fee. The calculator adds them up for one side of a trade and works out the selling price you need to break even after paying charges on both the purchase and the sale.

The charges in the calculator

Broker commission0.15% of the trade value or Rs 0.03 a share, whichever is higher (edit it to match your broker)Your broker

CDC transaction fee0.0036% of value, minimum Rs 5Central Depository Company
PSX trading and regulatory feesRs 3.50 and Rs 0.62 per Rs 100,000Pakistan Stock Exchange
NCCPL feesRs 0.81 and Rs 0.30 per Rs 100,000National Clearing Company
SECP feeRs 0.65 per Rs 100,000Securities and Exchange Commission

Brokers set their own commission within the exchange's limits; online brokers often charge less than the 0.15% shown, and some charge a flat fee. The minimum per-share rule matters for low-priced shares: 100,000 shares at Rs 5 cost Rs 3,000 in commission at Rs 0.03 a share, three times the 0.15% figure.

Break-even after charges

Because you pay charges when you buy and again when you sell, a share has to rise by roughly 0.35% to 0.45% for a round trip to break even at a 0.15% commission, more for low-priced shares hit by the per-share minimum. Frequent trading multiplies these costs, which is one reason long-term investors keep more of their returns.

Other costs to know

  • Capital gains tax on profitable sales, collected by NCCPL (see the CGT calculator).
  • Withholding tax on dividends.
  • Annual account fees charged by some brokers and CDC for investor accounts.
