Work out capital gains tax on a profitable sale of PSX shares from the purchase date and your filer status. Updated 7 Nov 2026.
When you sell listed shares at a profit, capital gains tax (CGT) is due on the gain. You do not pay it yourself at the tax office: the National Clearing Company (NCCPL) works it out on each sale and collects it through your broker, keeping a record of your purchase dates and prices. The rate depends mainly on when you bought the shares and whether you are on the FBR's Active Taxpayers List (a filer).
| Shares bought | Rate for filers |
|---|---|
| Before 1 July 2013 | 0% (exempt) |
| 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2022 | 12.5% |
| 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2024 | By holding period: 15% (up to 1 year), 12.5% (1 to 2 years), 10% (2 to 3), 7.5% (3 to 4), 5% (4 to 5), 2.5% (5 to 6), 0% (over 6 years) |
| On or after 1 July 2024 | 15%, however long you hold |
Non-filers pay a higher rate. Because the non-filer rate has been changed several times, the calculator lets you enter it; NCCPL's current schedule is the reference.
A filer buys 1,000 shares at Rs 100 in September 2024 and sells at Rs 150. The gain is Rs 50,000 before charges. At 15%, CGT is Rs 7,500, leaving Rs 42,500. With charges of about 0.2% on each side included, the taxable gain is slightly lower, about Rs 49,500, and the tax about Rs 7,425.
A loss on listed shares is not taxed and can be set off against gains on other listed securities in the same tax year; unused losses can be carried forward for a limited number of years. NCCPL applies set-offs across your account automatically when it computes the tax.
Dividends are taxed separately, at source, by the company paying them (usually 15% for filers): see the dividend calculator.
